Roof Treatments in Watervliet, NY

Dark streaks, moss and lichen hold water against your shingles and wear them down before their time. We apply a treatment that soaks into that growth and kills it where it grips. It goes on as a gentle, low-pressure spray, so your shingles keep their granules.

What a Roof Treatment Does

Most dark streaks on an asphalt roof are algae, not dirt or soot. It feeds on the limestone filler in many shingles and spreads a little more every year. Moss and lichen follow on shaded slopes, where the roof stays damp longest after rain or snowmelt.

A roof treatment is a solution we apply at low pressure. It soaks into the growth and kills it. Some of the staining lifts the same day. The rest fades over the following weeks as rain rinses the dead growth away. Nobody scrubs your shingles or blasts them, so the protective granules stay put.

We have been in business 5 years, and we treat every roof the way we would want our own handled. That means telling you plainly if your roof needs a treatment, needs nothing yet, or has problems a treatment will not fix.

What's Included in Every Roof Treatment

  1. 01

    Roof check before anything else

Before we mix a drop, we walk around the house and study each slope from the ground, then from a ladder where the footing is safe. We mark where growth is heaviest and mention any lifted shingles or tired flashing we spot.

  2. 02

    Plants watered and covered

Before any spraying starts, we soak the shrubs and flower beds along the house and drape covers over the ones right under the eaves. They get a second soaking once the roof is done.

  3. 03

    Gentle spray, slope by slope

We apply the solution with a soft spray, working down from the ridge one slope at a time. A pressure washer never goes near your shingles.

  4. 04

    Spot attention for moss

Thick moss mats get extra product. Loose clumps we can lift by hand without tearing shingles are cleared off so they do not keep holding water.

  5. 05

    Cleanup before we leave

We pick up any debris that came off the roof and walk the yard with you. You will know what to expect over the next few weeks as the last of the staining fades.

Signs Your Roof Could Use a Treatment

  • Black or dark gray streaks

Streaks running down from the ridge are the classic sign of algae. They usually show up first on north and west slopes.

  • Green moss along edges and seams

Moss loves the shady side of a roof and the spots under overhanging trees. It lifts shingle edges as it grows, which lets water get underneath.

  • Gray-green crusty patches

That flat, scaly growth is lichen. It grips the shingle surface tightly and gets harder to remove the longer it sits.

  • A roof that looks older than it is

If your shingles are only a few years old but the roof looks tired from the street, growth is often the reason. A treatment brings back a lot of that curb appeal.

  • Slopes that stay wet after rain

When one side of the roof stays damp long after the rest has dried, something living on it is holding moisture.

How the Day Goes

  1. 1

    Free quote by phone

Give us a ring and describe the streaks or moss. We pick a time to come out, look it over and hand you a price before anything goes on the calendar.

  2. 2

    Setup and protection

We arrive, park out of your way and set ladders on solid footing. Then we soak and cover the plants near the house.

  3. 3

    Treatment goes on

We work each slope from the top down at low pressure. Most single-family roofs are done in part of a day.

  4. 4

    Rinse, cleanup and walk-through

We rinse the plants and pick up debris. We show you what we treated and what to watch for as the roof clears over the coming weeks.

What Affects the Price

Each roof gets its own price, and you hear it up front. Three things drive it: the size of the roof, how tricky it is to reach and how much growth has built up. Nothing gets tacked on when the job wraps up.

Roof size
More square footage means more product and more time on the ladder.
Pitch and height
A steep roof or a tall two-and-a-half-story house takes more safety setup and slower, careful work.
How heavy the growth is
Light streaking needs a single pass. Thick moss and old lichen need extra product and hand work.
Access and plantings
Tight side yards, decks under the eaves or dense gardens along the foundation add setup and protection time.

Roof Treatment Questions

Will the treatment damage my shingles?

No. We use low pressure only, so the granules that protect your shingles stay in place. High pressure is what strips shingles and shortens a roof's life, and we do not use it on roofs.

How soon will my roof look better?

Some staining lifts the same day. Algae streaks and lichen fade over a few weeks as rain carries the dead growth off. Lichen is the slowest to let go.

Is it safe for my plants and pets?

We soak and cover plants before the first spray and rinse them again afterward. Please keep dogs and cats indoors during the work, and let them back out once the grass and beds are dry.

Do you have the right coverage to work on my roof?

Yes, we are licensed and insured. Our crew is up on ladders and roofs every week, and we set footing and safety gear before anyone climbs.

Can you look at permanent lighting while you're here?

Yes. If you have been thinking about permanent exterior lighting along your roofline, we can talk it through on the same visit and include it in your quote. Those lights come with a 10-year product warranty.

Do you work outside Watervliet?

We do. We treat roofs across the area, including Troy, Cohoes, Latham, Green Island and Menands. Check our Service Areas page or ask when you call.
